What is the Khoury Technique?

A Strong and Natural Solution for Advanced Bone Resorption Using Your Own Bone

Following tooth loss, bone resorption can occur in the jawbone over time. When bone loss advances, the bone volume must first be reconstructed to ensure the safe and successful placement of dental implants.

The Khoury Technique, which utilizes the patient’s own bone, is currently one of the most successful bone grafting methods for treating advanced bone loss. It yields highly successful long-term results, particularly for patients lacking sufficient bone volume in the upper or lower jaw for implant placement.

How is the Khoury Technique Performed?

In this technique, a small block of bone is typically harvested from the back of the lower jaw (posterior mandible). Using specialized surgical methods, this harvested bone is split into thin cortical plates, which are then positioned in the deficient area and secured with tiny titanium micro-screws.

The space between these plates is then meticulously filled with particulate bone chips, also obtained from the patient’s own bone. This creates a natural biological scaffold for new bone formation.

Once the healing process is complete, a solid and adequate bone foundation is achieved, making the area perfectly suited for implant placement.

Who is an Ideal Candidate?

The Khoury Technique is highly successful, especially for:

  • Patients with advanced jawbone resorption,
  • Individuals who have been edentulous (missing teeth) for many years,
  • Patients who were previously unable to get implants due to insufficient bone,
  • Cases requiring bone reconstruction following failed implant treatments,
  • Patients with inadequate bone volume in the esthetic (anterior) zone.

Why Use the Patient’s Own Bone (Autogenous Graft)?

Your own bone is the ultimate biological material, offering the highest potential to support and stimulate new bone formation.

One of the most significant advantages of this method is the use of your own living bone tissue. Consequently, the healing process occurs much more naturally, and long-term volume loss is minimized compared to synthetic alternatives.

💡 Advantages of the Khoury Technique

  • High success rates in cases of advanced bone loss
  • Unmatched biological compatibility (100% biocompatible) since it uses the patient’s own bone
  • Exceptional long-term volume stability
  • Creates a robust bone foundation for dental implants
  • Provides highly predictable results, especially in horizontal bone defects
  • Significantly increases the long-term survival rate of dental implants

What is the Treatment Process Like?

The treatment is typically performed in two stages.

The bone grafting procedure is completed in the first stage. Following a healing period of approximately 4 to 6 months, the newly formed bone is evaluated, and the dental implants are placed.

In certain eligible patients, bone augmentation and implant placement can be performed simultaneously in a single session. Whether this is suitable is determined after a comprehensive clinical examination and a 3D Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scan.

Is the Procedure Painful?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, or if necessary, with sedation or general anesthesia. Therefore, you will not feel any pain during the surgery. Any mild discomfort and swelling that may occur post-operatively can be easily managed with prescribed medications.

The Healing Process

Mild swelling and tenderness are to be expected for the first few days. Patients are generally able to return to their daily routines very quickly. The complete integration and maturation of the bone graft typically takes about 4 to 6 months.

Is the Khoury Technique Suitable for Every Patient?

No. Every case of bone loss is unique. While standard bone grafting and membrane applications may suffice for some patients, others may require the Khoury Technique, zygomatic implants, or other advanced surgical methods depending on the severity of the case.

The most accurate treatment plan is always customized for you following a detailed clinical examination and 3D CBCT imaging.

The Khoury Technique at Hospitaprime

At Hospitaprime, patients with advanced bone loss undergo meticulous evaluation using 3D digital planning. When necessary, we create tailored treatment plans by combining advanced surgical methods such as the Khoury Technique, Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR), pterygoid implants, and zygomatic implants.

Our goal is not simply to place implants; it is to establish a robust bone foundation that will ensure healthy, fully functional, and esthetically pleasing results for many years to come.
